Whispers in the Word

1 Kings 19:12

YHWH speaks to us. The Creator of all universes desires to be close to each of us. From Adam and Eve, to Moses, and Abraham we read of the conversations and see the effects of their interactions with their Creator. There were ebbs and flows in their relationships, yes, but also learning how to listen and trust.

The Redeemer of humanity transforms lives, sometimes abruptly redirecting vocational choices in the cases of Peter, Matthew, and S/Paul. There were times when circumstances orchestrated by YHWH changed their position, see in Joseph, Esther and Daniel. Yet, there are also the gentle transformations exhibited in the lives of Jacob, David and Solomon which occurred over time. All had habits learned from a trade, their family, or developed from previous choices. These habits were quiet choices, day in and day out.

We make hundreds of choices each day. From brushing our teeth to tithing, there are short and long term consequences for all of them. When making choices, what motivates and inspires us? With the rise of social media, many times we want to be seen and applauded. But just as an athlete makes the winning shot, we know that it took months and years of practicing, being corrected, practicing, making adjustments, practicing recovering from injury, practicing and more practice. So it is with hearing from our Creator and Redeemer. With so much noise, it can take a while to detangle our bodies, and quiet our minds to hear Him. By spending time with Holy Scriptures and the Holy Spirit, we can grow the fruits of the spirit. Growth takes time, and rain, and sun, and pruning to grow. The process often feels slow.

The Sun of Righteousness did not burst upon the world in splendor, to dazzle the senses with His glory…Quietly and gently the daylight breaks upon the earth, dispelling the darkness and waking the world to life. So did the Sun of Righteousness arise, “with healing in His wings.” Malachi 4:2. (Ministry of Healing 32.3) Are we still enough to hear him?

Questions for Discussion

  1. Where have you previously experienced YHWH?
  2. What is loudest in your life this season?
  3. In what ways can you practice stillness?

As we reflect on where we’ve experienced YHWH’s presence in the past and identify the sources of noise in our current season, let us commit to practicing stillness. In the gentle whispers and quiet moments, we find the true essence of divine communication, guiding and transforming us in ways we may not immediately see but profoundly impact our lives over time.
