When Faith Feels Like a Struggle

Holding On During Spiritual Dry Seasons

Faith is not always a mountaintop experience. There are seasons when prayer feels empty, Scripture feels distant, and God seems silent. If you have ever felt spiritually dry, you are not alone. Even biblical figures like David, Elijah, and Job faced times of doubt and discouragement.

But here is the good news: faith is not about how we feel; it is about who God is. Even when we do not sense His presence, He is still at work. So how do we navigate these dry seasons without giving up?

Why Spiritual Dry Spells Happen

1. Unmet Expectations

Sometimes, we expect faith to feel constant, exciting, and full of answered prayers. When life does not match those expectations, we start questioning where God is.

John the Baptist experienced this firsthand. After proclaiming Jesus as the Messiah, he found himself in prison, doubting: “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” (Matthew 11:3). Even the most faithful can struggle when life does not go as planned.

2. Overloaded and Spiritually Exhausted

Burnout is not just physical; it can be spiritual too. Serving constantly without personal renewal can drain us.

Even Elijah, after a major spiritual victory, collapsed in exhaustion and asked God to take his life (1 Kings 19:4). He needed rest, nourishment, and time in God’s presence to regain his strength.

3. Lingering Sin or Distractions

Sin can cloud our connection with God. But sometimes, it is not outright sin; it is distraction.

In a world filled with non-stop entertainment, work, and social media, it is easy to drown out God’s voice. If we spend more time scrolling than seeking, it is no wonder we feel distant.

How to Stay Engaged When God Feels Distant

1. Keep Showing Up

Even when you do not feel like it, stay in the Word, keep praying, and remain in community. If you are looking for Christ-centered community in this season, consider connecting with a local AYP chapter.

In Psalm 42, David acknowledges his feelings of spiritual dryness, yet still declares: “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him.” (Psalm 42:5)

Sometimes, the best thing we can do is keep seeking, even when we do not feel it.

2. Switch Up Your Spiritual Habits

Faith is a relationship, not a formula. If your usual routine feels stale, try something new.

  • Listen to Scripture through an audio Bible.
  • Worship with different music.
  • Take prayer walks instead of sitting in one place.
  • Journal your thoughts instead of just praying in your head.

God meets us in different ways, and sometimes a fresh approach can help us reconnect.

3. Be Honest with God

You do not have to pretend in prayer. Tell God exactly how you feel.

David constantly poured out his struggles in the Psalms. Job, Jeremiah, and even Jesus cried out in anguish. God welcomes our honesty. He does not need perfect words, just a willing heart.

Encouragement from Scripture for When Faith Feels Weak

1. God is near, even when you do not feel Him

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18

2. Your feelings do not change God’s faithfulness

“If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.” – 2 Timothy 2:13

3. This season will not last forever

“Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.” – Psalm 30:5

4. God is still at work in you

“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.” – Philippians 1:6
