Learning to Pivot Without Losing Purpose
“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” – Proverbs 19:21
Have you ever felt like life was heading in one direction, only for everything to change in an instant? Maybe you had a career plan, a relationship or a personal dream that didn’t turn out the way you expected. When God changes our plans, it can be frustrating, confusing and even painful. But what if these detours are actually divine redirections leading us to something even greater?
Why Detours in Life Are Often Divine Redirections
We often approach life with a roadmap in mind. We have goals, ambitions and carefully thought-out timelines. But God doesn’t always operate on our schedule. Throughout Scripture, we see countless examples of people whose plans were interrupted by God, only to find that His purpose was far greater than what they had envisioned.
Joseph dreamed of leadership, yet found himself betrayed by his brothers and imprisoned in Egypt. What seemed like a massive detour was actually God positioning him for something greater. By the time Joseph stepped into his role as second-in-command of Egypt, he could look back and say, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good” (Genesis 50:20).
Like Joseph, we may not understand the purpose behind our detours in the moment, but we can trust that God’s plan is always for our ultimate good.
How to Embrace Unexpected Changes with Trust
- Hold your plans loosely. It’s good to set goals, but always leave room for God to adjust them. Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”
- Seek God in the uncertainty. Instead of resisting change, lean into prayer and Scripture to discern what God might be teaching you through it.
- Find purpose in the present. Just because life isn’t going according to plan doesn’t mean it’s wasted time. God often uses seasons of waiting and redirection to refine our character.
- Trust that God sees the bigger picture. Even when things don’t make sense, believe that He is working all things together for good (Romans 8:28).
Biblical Figures Who Had Their Plans Changed by God
- Moses thought he would live a quiet life as a shepherd, but God called him to lead an entire nation out of slavery.
- Esther was placed in the palace “for such a time as this,” though she never expected to be queen or risk her life for her people.
- Paul planned to persecute Christians, but an encounter with Jesus completely transformed his purpose into spreading the gospel.
Each of these individuals had their lives radically redirected. And in every case, God’s plan was far greater than what they could have imagined.
