Learning to Trust When the Future is Unclear
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9
Uncertainty can be one of the most difficult challenges in our faith journey. We like to have a plan, a sense of direction, and the assurance that we’re on the right track. But often, God calls us to step forward before we have all the answers. Faith is about walking in trust, even when the future is unclear.
Faith in the Unknown
The Bible is filled with stories of people who had to trust God in uncertain circumstances. Think of Abraham, who left everything familiar to follow God’s call to an unknown land (Genesis 12:1-4). Or Peter, who stepped out of the boat to walk on water, only to realize how fragile his faith was when he focused on the storm rather than on Jesus (Matthew 14:28-31). Their journeys weren’t marked by having all the answers upfront—they were marked by obedience and trust in God’s leading.
Just like them, we won’t always have certainty before we move forward. What we do have is the promise of God’s presence. He never asks us to take a step alone.
Building Courageous Faith
Courageous faith isn’t about being fearless, it’s about choosing to trust God even when fear creeps in. Here are a few ways to cultivate trust in times of uncertainty:
- Remember God’s past faithfulness. When we look back on how God has led us before, we can be confident that He will do it again. Keep a journal of answered prayers and moments when God showed up in unexpected ways.
- Lean into Scripture. The Word of God is filled with promises that remind us of His faithfulness. Meditate on passages like Proverbs 3:5-6 and Isaiah 41:10 when doubt arises.
- Pray with honesty. God isn’t afraid of our questions or uncertainties. Bring your fears to Him, and ask for wisdom, peace, and clarity.
- Take small steps of faith. You don’t have to have the whole path figured out. Just take the next step. When we move in obedience, God often reveals the next step as we go.
Trusting God’s Timing
One of the hardest parts of trusting God is accepting that His timeline may not match ours. We want answers now, but God often works in seasons of preparation before He reveals the next step. Moses spent 40 years in the wilderness before leading Israel out of Egypt. David was anointed king long before he ever sat on the throne. Waiting isn’t wasted, it’s where God refines us and strengthens our trust in Him.
Discussion Questions

- How have you seen God’s faithfulness in past seasons of uncertainty?
- What is one step of faith you feel God calling you to take, even if you don’t have all the answers?

Final Thoughts
Courageous faith isn’t about knowing all the details in advance. It’s about choosing to trust that God is good, He is in control, and He is leading us, even when we can’t see what’s ahead. As you face uncertainty, remember that you’re not walking this road alone. God goes before you, walks beside you, and will never leave you.
