After I was blessed to finish my program and receive my Masters in Social Work, I thought I could land a job within a few weeks after graduation. My expectations were crushed. The job search turned from a few weeks to a few years. I began to pray fervently for a job I thought I wanted, and I would be okay to never ask God anything career related again if He answered my prayer. Among those unemployed years, I had also gotten extremely ill and discovered I had a chronic pain disorder that resulted in multiple surgeries and quite a few setbacks in my life. But just watch what God did.
My love for playing and watching sports and advocacy for mental health cultivated a special interest in a career in this sector. Mental health plays a significant factor in all our lives, and I was always interested in the role sports can play in it. As these passions presented themselves in my academic pursuit, I never thought a combination of social work and sports existed.
With prayer, patience, daily devotion, surrendering my will in exchange for God’s will, reaching out to my support systems, and allowing God to work in my heart and health, I slowly came to realize God had something far better in store for me than I could have ever imagined. I landed a job at a world-renowned-prestigious university as a clinical mental health therapist embedded in athletics, working with Division 1 athletes, far better than what I dreamed.
The way God can work in your heart to prepare you for a blessing that is far beyond what you could imagine and exceed your expectations is truly amazing. Although my health complications have not been completely resolved, I know God’s plan for me is bigger than my pain. Would you like to find out what God has prepared for you?
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11 NIV
