Biblical Passage: 2 Timothy 1:6-7
“For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”
In 2 Timothy 1:6-7, Paul encourages Timothy to “fan into flame the gift of God” and not be timid. He reminds Timothy that God has given us a spirit of power, love and self-discipline, not fear. This passage is a powerful affirmation that despite obstacles and fears, we are equipped by God to overcome challenges and fully use our gifts for His purposes.
Moses is a profound example of someone who faced significant obstacles in using his gifts. When God called Moses from the burning bush to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, Moses was immediately hesitant and self-doubting. He struggled with fear and insecurity, particularly about his speaking abilities, and expressed concerns that he was not the right person for the task. He even questioned God’s choice, saying, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant” (Exodus 4:10).
Moses’ reluctance reveals a common obstacle: feeling inadequate or unqualified for a task. Despite his hesitations, God reassured Moses by providing him with a helper, his brother Aaron, to speak on his behalf. This support did not diminish Moses’ calling but rather complemented it, showing that God often provides what we need to overcome our limitations.
Moses’ journey illustrates several strategies for overcoming obstacles. First, facing our fears often requires taking action despite our uncertainties. Moses had to step out in faith and return to Egypt, a daunting task fraught with personal and external challenges. Similarly, taking small, faith-filled steps can help us confront and eventually overcome our fears and limitations.
Second, Moses’ experience highlights the importance of support. Just as God provided Aaron, we can benefit from the encouragement and assistance of others. Whether through mentors, friends, or a community of believers, having support can make a significant difference in overcoming obstacles.
Lastly, prayer and seeking God’s guidance are crucial. Moses continually sought God’s direction and strength throughout his journey. In the same way, we should pray for courage, wisdom and perseverance, trusting that God will guide us and equip us to use our gifts effectively.
Remember that God has given you a spirit of power, love and self-discipline to overcome these challenges. By taking small steps of faith, seeking support from others and relying on prayer, you can navigate and overcome the obstacles that hinder your full potential.
Reflection Questions:
- What fears or obstacles have you encountered that have hindered you from fully using your gifts?
- How can you overcome these barriers, and what practical steps can you take to step out in faith and use your gifts more boldly?
- Reflect on a time when you faced a challenge but were able to overcome it. How did that experience build your confidence, and how can it apply to using your gifts?
Challenge:
Today, choose a biblical character, such as Moses, who used their gifts for God’s purposes despite facing obstacles. Research their story and write a brief reflection on how their example inspires you. Share your reflection with a group or a friend to encourage discussion on how you can follow their example in overcoming your own obstacles.
