Using Social Media for Ministry

-

Social media is no longer an optional communication channel for ministries and churches. For many people, it is where they spend a significant portion of their time, discover new organizations, build relationships, and engage with faith-based content.

In this webinar, Christina Norris, Associate Director of Communication for the Southern Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, shares practical strategies for using social media more effectively in ministry settings. Drawing from more than five years of experience in digital communication, she explores how churches, ministries, and Christian organizations can use social platforms to connect with people, build community, and extend their reach.

Key Insights

Meet People Where They Are

While in-person ministry remains essential, social media creates opportunities to reach individuals who may never walk through the doors of a church. Research shows that many people engage with faith-based content online through social media, podcasts, videos, and livestreams. Effective digital ministry recognizes that online spaces are often the first point of contact in a person’s spiritual journey.

Choose Platforms Strategically

Not every ministry needs to be active on every platform. Christina encourages organizations to start with a clear understanding of their goals, audience, and available resources. Rather than spreading efforts across multiple channels, ministries often achieve better results by focusing on one platform and doing it well before expanding further.

Focus on Relationship Building

Social media is more than a digital bulletin board. Successful accounts build relationships with their audiences by engaging with comments, responding to questions, and creating content that serves and encourages people. Consistent interaction helps transform followers into an active community.

Create Content People Want to Share

Before publishing any post, ask simple questions:

  • Will people care about this?
  • Would someone want to share it with a friend?
  • Is this the best format for the message?
  • Does it reach the audience we are trying to reach?

The most effective content often provides value, inspiration, encouragement, or connection rather than simply promoting upcoming events.

Video Continues to Lead

Short-form video remains one of the most effective tools available to communicators. Viewers are significantly more likely to remember and act on a message delivered through video than through text alone. Ministries that can consistently create simple, authentic video content are often rewarded with increased reach and engagement.

Consistency Matters More Than Perfection

Many organizations become discouraged when they do not see immediate growth. Christina emphasizes that meaningful results often require several months of consistent effort. Posting regularly, evaluating what works, and refining strategy over time are more important than chasing quick wins.

Learn from Your Analytics

Rather than focusing exclusively on likes or follower counts, communicators should pay attention to reach, views, engagement patterns, and audience behavior. Analytics can reveal which content resonates most and help guide future content decisions.

Use Social Media as a Ministry Tool

At its best, social media is not about algorithms or trends. It is about creating opportunities for meaningful connection and sharing the gospel with people who may otherwise never encounter your ministry. Digital platforms give churches and organizations the ability to extend their influence far beyond physical walls and geographic boundaries.
