“And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.” – 1 Kings 19:12
In a world filled with noise and constant demands for our attention, finding the still, small voice of God can feel like searching for a whisper in a storm. Yet, it’s in these quiet moments that God often speaks most clearly. In 1 Kings 19:12, Elijah encounters God not in the wind, earthquake, or fire, but in a gentle whisper. This month, as we focus on recognizing God’s presence in the everyday, we are reminded that He is often found in the subtle and the quiet, rather than the loud and the dramatic.
Life as a young professional can be incredibly busy, with responsibilities piling up at work, home, and even within our personal goals. It is easy to get caught up in the whirlwind and miss the gentle whispers of God’s guidance. But just like Elijah, we need to create space to hear God in the stillness. The story of Elijah teaches us that God’s presence is not always accompanied by grand displays; sometimes, it is found in the moments when we are still enough to listen.
One of the greatest promises God makes is found in Exodus 33:14, where He says, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” This is not just a promise of physical rest, but of spiritual peace that comes from knowing that God is with us, guiding us even when life feels overwhelming. In the busyness of our lives, we can hold on to this assurance: God’s presence is constant, and He invites us into rest, even in the midst of our hectic schedules.
At Adventist Young Professionals (AYP), we encourage you to seek out these moments of stillness. Whether it is through personal devotion, participation in AYP’s fellowship groups, or taking a few minutes of quiet prayer during a busy day, make space for God’s whisper. It is in these intentional pauses that we often hear His guidance most clearly. Jeremiah 29:13 reminds us, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” God isn’t hiding; He’s waiting for us to quiet the noise around us and listen for His voice.
Jesus also speaks of this in John 10:27, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” This is a powerful reminder that hearing God’s voice isn’t a one-time event; it’s a continual process of being attuned to His guidance. The more we seek Him, the more we recognize His voice in our lives. And the more we follow His lead, the more peace we find, even in the midst of life’s demands.
So how do we cultivate this kind of spiritual sensitivity? It begins with prioritizing time with God, even in the midst of a busy schedule. This might mean setting aside time each day to read scripture, meditate on His Word, or simply sit in silence, asking God to speak to your heart. It might mean disconnecting from technology for a bit to reconnect with God’s presence. And it might mean finding community in AYP, where you can share your journey with others who are also learning to listen for God’s voice.
In the whirlwind of life, it is easy to expect God to speak to us through big, obvious signs. More often than not, He chooses to meet us in the quiet places, in the whispers that require us to pause and pay attention. As you navigate this month, I encourage you to make room for those whispers. Listen for God’s voice in the ordinary moments—in a conversation with a friend, in a walk through nature, or in the quiet of your heart.
God’s whispers carry profound truth, direction, and comfort. Let us commit to listening for them, trusting that as we seek Him, we will find Him. In finding Him, we will discover the peace and guidance we need to navigate whatever lies ahead.
