Steps of Courage

“Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord.” – Psalm 31:24

Every journey begins with a single step. But when the road ahead seems uncertain or overwhelming, even that first step can feel impossible. As followers of Christ, we are called to move forward in faith, not because we have all the answers, but because we trust the One who guides us. Courage is not the absence of fear—it is the decision to keep moving despite it, relying on God’s strength for every step.

In Psalm 23:4, David proclaims, “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” Life’s valleys may feel isolating and impossible to navigate, but God’s presence transforms these moments into opportunities to grow in trust and courage. David’s words remind us that we don’t walk alone. With God beside us, each step becomes an act of faith, a declaration that His plans and protection are greater than any fear we face.

Isaiah 41:10 further encourages us: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” The courage to advance in faith comes from knowing that God is not only ahead of us, preparing the way, but also beside us, holding us steady. When we feel weak or unsure, His strength fills the gaps, empowering us to keep going.

As young professionals, we often face decisions that feel weighty—career changes, personal growth, relationships, and spiritual pursuits. These choices can seem overwhelming, but Proverbs 16:9 reassures us, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” God doesn’t ask us to figure out the entire journey; He simply asks us to trust Him with the next step.

At Adventist Young Professionals (AYP), we recognize that the path of faith is not meant to be walked alone. In our community, we encourage one another to take those courageous steps of faith, whether it’s through mentorship, small groups, or shared service opportunities. Together, we are reminded that even the smallest steps, when taken in faith, lead to growth, transformation, and a deeper connection with God.

Courage doesn’t mean you won’t feel fear. It means choosing to trust God despite it. Proverbs 3:5-6 invites us to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” This promise assures us that when we entrust our steps to God, He will faithfully guide us, even when the way forward seems unclear.

This month, take time to reflect on where God might be calling you to step forward in faith. It could be a new opportunity, a relationship that needs mending, or simply trusting Him in a challenging season. Whatever it may be, know that God goes before you, beside you, and within you, equipping you with the courage to keep moving.

As we embark on the journey of faith, may we find strength in God’s promises, courage in His presence, and hope in His guidance. One step at a time, let’s walk forward together, knowing that He is always faithful to lead us.
