Learning from Those Who Walked with Jesus
When we think of the first disciples, we might picture them as spiritual giants—men with unwavering faith and unmatched devotion. But they were ordinary people just like us. They had doubts, made mistakes, and struggled to fully understand Jesus’ mission. Jesus called them anyway, transforming them into leaders who changed the world. Their journey holds powerful lessons for us as modern-day disciples.
Jesus Calls the Unqualified
The first disciples were not scholars, religious elites, or influential figures. They were fishermen, tax collectors, and everyday workers. Jesus didn’t seek people who were already qualified—He equipped the ones He called.
When Jesus approached Simon Peter and Andrew, He said:
“Come, follow me, and I will send you out to fish for people.” (NIV Matthew 4:19)
Without hesitation, they left their nets and followed Him. Their willingness to respond immediately reminds us that Jesus calls based not on our credentials but on our willingness to follow.
If you’ve ever felt unworthy or unprepared to serve God, remember this: God is not looking for perfection—He’s looking for obedience. Just as He took ordinary people and used them for extraordinary purposes, He can do the same with you.
Key Lessons from the First Disciples
Their journey was not easy, but their experiences provide deep insight into what it means to follow Jesus wholeheartedly.
Immediate Obedience Matters
Peter, Andrew, James, and John responded without delay when Jesus called them. They left their boats, jobs, and comfort zones to follow Him. Their example challenges us to ask:
Are we willing to step out in faith, even without all the answers?
Faith Grows Through Failure
Peter denied Jesus three times, but Jesus restored him and later used him to help build the early church. Thomas doubted the resurrection until he saw Jesus in person. The disciples often misunderstood His teachings. Each failure became a learning moment that strengthened their faith.
We will also stumble in our walk with Christ, but failure is not final. What matters is how we respond—will we allow Jesus to refine and restore us, just as He did with His disciples?
Discipleship Requires Leaving Comfort Behind
Following Jesus meant leaving behind familiar routines, financial security, and personal ambitions. The disciples chose faith over comfort, trusting Jesus had something greater in store.
While we may not be asked to leave everything behind in the same way, discipleship still requires us to step beyond what feels safe. It means prioritizing God’s will over our own, even when it’s difficult.
Community Strengthens Our Walk
The disciples didn’t follow Jesus alone. They walked together, learned together, and supported each other. After Jesus’ ascension, they continued relying on their community of believers to spread the gospel and remain strong in faith.
This reminds us that we need fellow believers to strengthen our walk. Discipleship isn’t meant to be a solo journey—it thrives in community.
Carrying Their Legacy Forward
The first disciples were flawed, but God used them to transform the world. Their story teaches us that discipleship is about progress, not perfection. It’s about saying yes to Jesus daily, even when we feel unworthy or uncertain.
Jesus is still calling disciples today.
He is calling you.
Are you ready to follow Him, even when it challenges you?
Will you allow Him to turn your weaknesses into strengths?
