The Weight of a Divine Call
“If you mess up, we are all going down because of you!”
“I hope you know what you’re doing!”
“It better not be someone else trying to influence you to leave!”
These were some of the things loved ones said when I shared my heartache about what I believed was a call from God. My stomach twisted, my thoughts raced, and doubts crept in. Did I really hear from God? Was He truly asking me to step into the unknown?
Over a year ago, I felt a stirring in my spirit—a feeling I couldn’t ignore. The more I tried, the more desperate and drained I felt. During this time, one story kept coming back to me: Abraham’s journey. He set out with no map, trusting God completely. Through his faith and obedience, God’s blessing unfolded—not just for him, but for generations to come.
Thousands of years later, I found myself standing at a similar edge. Call it what you will, but nothing feels more bolder than answering God’s call. Why leave the comfort of my life—financial security, family, home—for a path with no clear end? The doubts were many, and the weight of others’ opinions was heavy.
Lessons from Abraham
In Genesis 15:1-6, God reassures Abraham: “Do not be afraid, for I am your shield and your great reward.” Yet even with this promise, Abraham worried. He had no heir and felt incomplete. He was so consumed by what he lacked that, in his distress, he momentarily overlooked the very presence of the One who stood beside him.
In response, God gently guides Abraham’s gaze to something far greater than his immediate worry—a glimpse of the vastness of His promise, a vision of the stars above, countless and beyond measure. It was in this breathtaking sight that God quieted Abraham’s anxious soul, revealing not just a promise of descendants, but a deeper peace that only comes when we shift our focus from what we lack to the boundless reality of who God is.
When doubt clouds the path ahead, how do we step into the unknown with courage? I’ve been learning there are at least two fundamental keys that guide the way forward.
Behold Him
One night, God brought this lesson to life in a dream. I found myself transported back to the time of Abraham, where tents were homes, and the air was filled with the crackling warmth of campfires, their flickering light breaking the stillness of the desert night. Alone in my tent, I sat, troubled, clutching a small piece of torn cardboard. It made no sense—this scrap of paper in my hands, and yet I couldn’t shake the weight of it. My heart was stormy—pensive, frustrated, searching for answers.
Then, I felt a prompting from God to step outside. Clutching the cardboard, I went out and looked up, awestruck by the sky adorned with more brilliant stars than I had ever seen before. It was still and quiet. In my mind, I heard a whisper:
“Look at what I’ve created. Observe what I can achieve! This is my resumé. If I can make these stars shine so brightly, why not you?”
The cardboard in my hand suddenly felt insignificant. It represented all my worries and doubts I couldn’t solve on my own, no matter how tightly I clung to it. In that moment, I realized: when in doubt, let go and behold God.
Align with His Word
As you learn to behold Him, you will understand who you are, whose you are and the power you wield. Isaiah 43:1 – 4 provides a glimpse into this.
-
“You are Redeemed. He has called you by name. You are His.” – That’s Intentional
-
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.” – That’s Positional
-
“You are precious and honored in My sight.” – That’s Exceptional
God doesn’t simply see you as worthy. He sees you as treasured, someone of immeasurable value. Life may present its obstacles, its storms and uncertainties—but in every challenge, there’s a divine assurance: you will not be consumed by them. With God by your side, those very storms will become stepping stones, each one a part of the journey that leads you forward.
Stepping into the Unknown
This is your inheritance. Following God’s call does not mean stepping into emptiness—it’s stepping into the fullness of His promise. Embrace it. Live it. Let the certainty of who you are and whose you are shape the way you walk through every uncertain, uncharted path. With Him, the unknown becomes not a fear, but a canvas for faith.
