In our digital world, the topic of influence seems to be evident all around us. We see lifestyle influencers, travel influencers, and fashion influencers all impacting people’s thoughts and behaviors. What’s noteworthy, is that influence spans beyond the digital world of social media. The truth is that whether a person has a community of thousands or just a few, everyone has influence.
As followers of Christ, I believe we are called to influence with purpose and to intentionally be agents of change for Christ. We must not just live the Adventist lifestyle on Sabbath, but we should portray our Christian values in every aspect of our life. Often we think of evangelism as consisting of a big meeting with a famous Adventist preacher, we think of outreach as canvassing or giving out glow tracks, but to truly change lives for Christ, we must do life alongside those we seek to impact, and as such, we must represent Christ each and every day.
The Adventist Young Professional community exists to cultivate experiences that welcome both people of our faith community as well as those who may not be familiar with Adventism. Our chapters and groups exist to help young professionals do life alongside their coworkers, neighbors, and friends. As you engage in these communities, as you perhaps even launch your own, or as you simply live your daily life, I encourage you to keep five simple principles in mind so your influence may be purposeful and centered on Jesus.
Don’t Start With An Agenda
The first principle of influencing with purpose is to not have an agenda. Instead of trying to push our own perspectives or ideas onto others, we should seek to build genuine relationships and connections with those around us. This means being open and receptive to the perspectives and experiences of others, and being willing to engage in meaningful dialogue and conversation.
Listen With An Open Perspective
As you engage, speak less and listen more. We should spend 90% of the time listening and should do so with an open mind. People love to talk – by actively listening and understanding their life experiences, and by being willing to learn from their insights and perspectives, you’ll grow and thrive to the next level. By listening with an open mind and heart, we can gain a greater understanding of their needs and concerns and we can build trust that eventually will open the door for us to share Christ with them.
Support People’s Immediate Needs
AYP’s chapters and groups provide spaces and resources that help young professionals make meaningful connections. As a ministry we work hard to equip you for life and career. In our personal circles, before we share our faith, we need to support people’s immediate human needs. This involves active listening, but it also requires us to provide support in practical and tangible ways. Whether it’s offering a listening ear, providing a helping hand, or simply being present with someone in their time of need, let’s be attentive to the immediate needs of those around us.
Grow In Excellence
Have you ever noticed what big brands and individuals who grow large communities have in common? Yes, they meet real needs that people have, but they thrive because they do so with excellence. Influencers put out content, products, and services that are high quality and worth our time and money. In our work and life, we strive for excellence, we put energy toward our careers and personal lives, but how often do we give just half our effort when it comes to our Christian journey or ministry service? As young professionals, we have our whole life ahead of us, so let’s continually grow in excellence, putting our full effort and energy toward being Jesus to those around us – giving 100% where it really counts.
Make Christ The Focus
As open-minded active listeners who support those around us with excellence, people will be excited to find out why we live how we live. They will want to know what shapes our character, and what grounds our faith. In these divine opportunities, let us always give Jesus the credit, let’s resist the desire to be the center of attention and let’s make Him the focus. This brings us full circle back to living in a way that honors God and reflects the love and grace of Jesus Christ. By making God the center of our lives and giving Him the credit when the opportunity arises, we can be a powerful force for good in the world and we will make a lasting impact on the lives of those whom we are blessed with influence over.
I encourage you to cultivate your life in a way that enables you to thrive as an influencer for Christ, to live each and every moment with purpose, and to love like Jesus – embracing the principles of building genuine relationships, listening with an open perspective, supporting the immediate needs of those you encounter, and doing these things in excellence with Christ as your focus. May each of us be effective ambassadors for Christ today and forevermore.
Influencia con Propósito
En nuestro mundo digital, el tema de la influencia parece ser evidente a nuestro alrededor. Vemos personas influyentes en el estilo de vida, personas influyentes en los viajes y personas influyentes en la moda que afectan los pensamientos y comportamientos de las personas. Lo que es digno de mención es que la influencia se extiende más allá del mundo digital de las redes sociales. La verdad es que ya sea que una persona tenga una comunidad de miles o solo unos pocos, todos tienen influencia.
Como seguidores de Cristo, creo que estamos llamados a influir con propósito y a ser intencionalmente agentes de cambio para Cristo. No solo debemos vivir el estilo de vida adventista el sábado, sino que debemos representar nuestros valores cristianos en todos los aspectos de nuestra vida. A menudo pensamos que el evangelismo consiste en una gran reunión con un famoso predicador adventista, que las formas de divulgación son el colportaje y la distribución de material, pero para cambiar verdaderamente vidas para Cristo, debemos vivir junto a aquellos a quienes buscamos impactar, y como tal, debemos representar a Cristo todos y cada uno de los días.
La comunidad de Jóvenes Profesionales Adventistas (AYP, por su siglas en inglés) existe para cultivar experiencias que acogen tanto a las personas de nuestra comunidad de fe como a quienes no estén familiarizados con el adventismo. Nuestros cabildos y grupos existen para ayudar a los jóvenes profesionales a vivir junto a sus compañeros de trabajo, vecinos y amigos. A medida que participes en estas comunidades, quizás si inicias tu propio grupo o cabildo, o mientras simplemente vives tu vida diaria, te animo a tener en cuenta cinco principios simples para que tu influencia pueda tener un propósito y estar centrada en Jesús.
No empieces con una agenda
El primer principio de influir con propósito es no tener una agenda. En lugar de tratar de imponer nuestras propias perspectivas o ideas a los demás, debemos buscar construir relaciones y conexiones genuinas con quienes nos rodean. Escucha con una perspectiva abierta
A medida que participes, habla menos y escucha más. Deberíamos pasar el 90% del tiempo escuchando y deberíamos hacerlo con la mente abierta. Los cabildos y grupos de AYP brindan espacios y recursos que ayudan a los jóvenes profesionales a establecer conexiones significativas. Como ministerio, trabajamos arduamente para equiparle para la vida y la carrera. En nuestros círculos personales, antes de compartir nuestra fe, debemos apoyar las necesidades humanas inmediatas de las personas. Esto implica una escucha activa, pero también requiere que brindemos apoyo de manera práctica y tangible. Ya sea ofreciendo un oído atento, brindando una mano amiga o simplemente estando presente con alguien en su momento de necesidad, estemos atentos a las necesidades inmediatas de quienes nos rodean.
Crece en excelencia
¿Alguna vez has notado qué tienen en común las grandes marcas y las personas que hacen crecer grandes comunidades? Sí, ellos satisfacen necesidades reales que tiene la gente, pero prosperan porque lo hacen con excelencia. Los influencers publican contenido, productos y servicios de alta calidad que hace valer nuestro tiempo y dinero. En nuestro trabajo y vida, nos esforzamos por la excelencia, ponemos energía en nuestras carreras y vidas personales, pero ¿con qué frecuencia damos solo la mitad de nuestro esfuerzo cuando se trata de nuestra vida cristiana o ministerio? Como jóvenes profesionales, tenemos toda la vida por delante, así que crezcamos continuamente en excelencia, poniendo todo nuestro esfuerzo y energía para ser como Jesús para quienes nos rodean, dando el 100% donde realmente cuenta.
Haz que el enfoque sea en Cristo
Como oyentes activos de mente abierta que apoyan a quienes nos rodean con excelencia, las personas estarán emocionadas de descubrir por qué vivimos como vivimos. Querrán saber qué da forma a nuestro carácter y qué fundamenta nuestra fe. En estas oportunidades divinas, démosle siempre el crédito a Jesús, resistamos el deseo de ser el centro de atención y hagamos de Él el centro de atención. Esto nos trae de vuelta al punto de partida para vivir de una manera que honre a Dios y refleje el amor y la gracia de Jesucristo. Al hacer de Dios el centro de nuestras vidas y darle el crédito cuando surge la oportunidad, podemos ser una fuerza poderosa para el bien en el mundo y tendremos un impacto duradero en las vidas de aquellos sobre quienes somos bendecidos con influencia.
Los animo a cultivar su vida de una manera que les permita prosperar como influenciadores de Cristo, vivir todos y cada uno de los momentos con un propósito y amar como Jesús, abrazando los principios de construir relaciones genuinas, escuchando con una perspectiva abierta, apoyando las necesidades inmediatas de aquellos con los que te encuentras, y haciendo estas cosas con excelencia con Cristo como tu enfoque. Que cada uno de nosotros seamos embajadores efectivos de Cristo hoy y siempre.
