Adventist Young Professionals (AYP) exists to foster Christ-centered community through spiritual growth, leadership development, and impactful service. While our programs and resources serve young professionals directly, the impact extends beyond AYP itself—we are actively strengthening local churches and supporting conferences in their mission to engage and disciple young adults.
A Pipeline Back to the Church
Many young adults who grew up in the church become less active during their college years and early career. AYP serves as a bridge, reconnecting them with a Christ-centered community of fellow young professionals. Through AYP chapters, young adults find belonging, spiritual growth, and opportunities for service—all of which inspire them to re-engage with their local church. Additionally, AYP gatherings create a welcoming space where the friends and coworkers of Adventist young professionals can be introduced to faith. While they may not initially be ready to attend a worship service, they will join their Adventist friends at an AYP event—often leading to deeper engagement with an Adventist church.
Shari and Angie: Finding a Loving Church Family
One day, while taking a walk in his neighborhood, an AYP leader was approached by Shari, a young professional who had recently moved to the Washington, DC area. Shari had found AYP through a Google search and recognized the leader from the website. She shared how she was looking for a faith-based community but wasn’t sure where to start. Through AYP’s network of church partners, Shari was connected with several Adventist churches with vibrant young adult ministries. What began as an online search turned into a meaningful church home, where she is now actively involved.
Similarly, AYP has helped introduce non-Adventists to the faith. Angie, a young professional from Georgia, was spending the summer in Minneapolis for an internship. As she prepared for her move, she stumbled upon AYP through social media and decided to attend a gathering. Through Saturday afternoons with AYP Minneapolis, she made new friends and learned about the Adventist faith. Despite being over a thousand miles from home, Angie found a Christ-focused community that kept her grounded in her faith.
A Leadership Development Catalyst
One of AYP’s core goals is to develop strong, mission-minded leaders for local churches. We view our greatest success as an AYP volunteer stepping away from our team to serve in their local congregation. Through leadership roles in AYP chapters, mentorship opportunities, and leadership development resources, young adults gain the experience and confidence they need to contribute meaningfully to their church’s ministry. By equipping young professionals with real-world leadership training, we help create the next generation of Sabbath School teachers, elders, ministry leaders, and church board members.
Jasmin’s Story: From Attendee to Church Leader
Jasmin first joined AYP as a participant, attending events but not heavily involved in leadership. Over time, she took on multiple roles within AYP, which stretched her comfort zone and ignited a passion for ministry leadership. Around the same time, her local church was engaging with the North American Division’s Growing Together curriculum, which focused on equipping young adults for leadership. Inspired by her AYP experience, Jasmin transitioned from AYP leadership to serving directly in her local church. While AYP lost a leader, the church gained one. This is an outcome that AYP considers a true success.
A Partner in Young Adult Ministry
Many conferences and churches struggle with staffing and resources to run effective young adult programming. AYP’s chapter teams are composed of dedicated, lay-led leaders who are eager to put their ideas into action. By collaborating with churches and conferences, AYP helps organize impactful programs that resonate with young adults. Whether it’s a small group Bible study, service initiative, networking event, or spiritual retreat, our chapters provide conferences and churches with ready-made, high-quality programming that advances their mission to reach and retain young adults.
AYP & Columbia Union: Creating Mission Opportunities
AYP’s collaboration with the Columbia Union is a prime example of how we support conferences in engaging young adults. Through a grant from the union, AYP organized a local mission trip in the Washington, DC area. This initiative brought together young adults from across the region to serve a local church by renovating its grounds, making it a more welcoming space for the community. The mission trip also included outreach efforts in downtown Washington, DC, where volunteers engaged in street ministry. With a small youth and young adult department, the Columbia Union benefited from AYP’s ability to mobilize young adults for mission while AYP was able to provide opportunities for both community service and evangelism.
Stronger Together
AYP is not a substitute for the local church, it’s a partner in strengthening it. By re-engaging young professionals, developing leaders, and providing practical support, AYP is helping to build a thriving future for the Adventist Church.
