Katie Hill’s AYP Journey
When Katie Hill looked around her small church on Sabbath mornings, she couldn’t help but notice what was missing: peers. Young adults who, like her, were navigating the space between college and settled life, trying to figure out how faith fits into careers, relationships, and daily decisions.
“It’s just a season,” she’d tell herself as she watched the families with young children or the older members gather in their circles after service. But as weeks turned into months, that season of isolation began to weigh heavily on her spirit.
Last fall, Katie’s feeling of disconnection reached a breaking point. She found herself sitting alone one Friday evening, Bible open but heart heavy. “Lord,” she prayed, “I need community. I need other young people who are serious about following You, who understand what I’m going through. Please bring them into my life.”
Little did she know, God was already orchestrating an answer.
An Unexpected Invitation
Just weeks after that earnest prayer, Katie reconnected with an old friend. Their conversation turned to church life, and that’s when her friend mentioned something Katie hadn’t heard of before.
“Have you heard about AYP Nashville? It’s this new Adventist Young Professionals group that just started up. We’re meeting this weekend—you should come!”
Katie was hesitant at first. New social settings had always made her a bit nervous, and she wondered if it would be worth the effort. Would these be people she could really connect with? Or would it be another surface-level experience?
Something told her to take the chance.
First Impressions That Lasted
Katie still remembers walking into her first AYP event. The room was filled with young adults from various churches across the city—faces she recognized from large gatherings but had never really gotten to know, along with many she’d never seen before.
What struck her immediately was the atmosphere. It wasn’t stiff or formal. People were laughing, engaged in genuine conversation. When the worship portion began, there was an authenticity to it that resonated deeply with Katie. No one was going through motions—these young professionals were passionate about their relationship with God.
“This is different,” she thought to herself. And she was right.
That first event quickly led to a second, then a third. Before she knew it, AYP gatherings had become a cornerstone of Katie’s weekly routine. But more than that, the people she met there were becoming real friends—the kind who text during the week to check in, who remember what she’s struggling with and follow up.
“How did that work meeting go?” someone would ask. “I’ve been praying about that family situation you mentioned,” another would share.
It wasn’t just about having social events to attend. It was about being known, being supported, being challenged to grow.
Growth Beyond Expectation
What Katie didn’t expect was how AYP would impact areas of her life beyond just providing friendship. The professional networking opportunities had been invaluable – she’s received career advice, job leads, and even mentoring connections through relationships formed through AYP.
But the spiritual growth had been even more significant. Hearing how others integrated their faith into their professional lives gave Katie new perspective. Watching young professionals boldly share their faith in their workplaces inspires her to be more courageous in her own.
During one particularly powerful worship session, a fellow AYP member shared their testimony about standing firm in their values despite pressure at work. That story gave Katie the courage to have a difficult conversation with her co-workers the following week—a conversation that actually led to positive change in her department.
Finding A Place to Serve
Perhaps most transformative was discovering how Katie could contribute to this community. After months of being nourished by others, she found herself stepping into service roles—helping plan events, leading out in discussion groups, and even sharing her own testimony.
Those words were healing to someone who had felt invisible in church settings for so long. Through AYP, Katie wasn’t just receiving—she was becoming a contributor, using her gifts to strengthen others the way she had been strengthened.
A Prayer Answered Beyond Expectation
Looking back at that prayer last fall, Katie is amazed at how completely God answered it. She didn’t just find a few young adult friends—she found an entire community of peers who are passionate about following Jesus while navigating the realities of professional life.
“Katie, your gifts are essential to this community,” her AYP team leader encouraged her. “God can use your unique experiences for His glory in ways you cannot even imagine.”
“AYP has been a tremendous encouragement for my faith,” Katie often tells people now. “I love that we gather to worship and pray for one another. The people I’ve met at AYP have inspired me in my walk with the Lord.”
What started as a desperate prayer for connection has blossomed into one of the richest blessings in Katie’s life. Her faith is stronger. Her professional life has more purpose. And most importantly, she no longer walks alone.
For anyone feeling isolated in their faith journey, Katie’s story is proof that God hears those prayers. Sometimes, the answer is already taking shape just around the corner. For Katie, it was AYP – a community that has truly changed her life.
An Invitation to Others
Now, when Katie sees someone new walk through the doors at an AYP event – looking perhaps a bit uncertain, as she once did – she makes it a point to welcome them personally. Because she knows that behind their attendance might be a similar prayer, a similar longing for connection.
“AYP has been the answer to my prayers,” she shares. “And it might be exactly what you’ve been praying for too.”
