Zephaniah 1

The Day That's Coming

"The great day of the Lord is near, near and coming quickly." (Zephaniah 1:14)

Zephaniah opens with one of the most sweeping declarations in the prophets. God is going to sweep away everything. People and animals. Birds and fish. The idols and their worshipers. The complacent who say God won’t do anything good or bad. The merchants. The wealthy. The ones who have settled into lives that leave no room for God.

It’s uncomfortable reading. Not because judgment is new in the prophets. But because of who specifically gets named. Not just the obviously wicked. The complacent. The ones who said God won’t do anything. The ones who simply stopped paying attention.

That’s the category I find most sobering. Not rebellion. Indifference. The spiritual life that has become so comfortable and routine that God has effectively been removed from it without anyone making a conscious decision to remove Him.

Zephaniah is writing to people who still have the forms of religion. They’re not atheists. They still know the vocabulary. They’ve just stopped believing it matters.

That drift is quieter than outright rebellion. And apparently just as serious.
