Romans 8

No Condemnation

"Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." (Romans 8:1)

That word therefore carries the weight of everything in chapters 1 through 7. All the diagnosis. All the failure. All the internal war. All the not doing the good I want to do. Therefore. In light of all of that. No condemnation.

I think Romans 8 is the chapter I return to more than any other in Paul’s letters. Not just because of verse 1. Because of the whole movement. The Spirit who raised Jesus lives in you. The sufferings of the present are not worth comparing to the glory that will be revealed. Nothing can separate you from the love of God.

Nothing. Not death, not life, not angels, not demons, not the present, not the future, not any powers, not height, not depth, not anything else in all creation. Nothing.

I’ve read that passage in seasons where I was trying to convince myself of it. Where the condemnation felt louder than the promise. Where the failure was recent and the shame was loud and the therefore felt thin. And what I’ve found is that the passage doesn’t need my feelings to be true. It just is. I can be wrong about it in the moment. It remains true anyway.

That’s the nature of a promise that isn’t grounded in my performance. It holds when I can’t hold myself.

QUESTION TO CONSIDER
What would change in how you live if you actually believed no condemnation was the permanent verdict over you?
