Romans 12

The Living Sacrifice

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God." (Romans 12:1)

Here, we see Paul redefining sacrifice. In the old system, the sacrifice died. This one stays alive. And what makes it a sacrifice is exactly that: you’re alive, and you’re choosing to live as though you’re not your own.

He reminds us to not be conformed to the pattern of this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our mind. And then, he says to think of yourself with sober judgment. With the measure of faith God has given.

The person who overestimates themselves serves badly. The person who underestimates themselves serves barely. Sober judgment is what allows you to know what you actually have to offer and offer it well.

The rest of chapter 12 is practical and fast. Love genuinely. Hate evil. Honor one another. Be joyful in hope. Patient in affliction. Faithful in prayer. Don’t be proud. Don’t be conceited. Don’t repay evil with evil. Live at peace with everyone.

That list moves fast because it’s describing a way of being, not a checklist to complete. It’s what a living sacrifice looks like in ordinary days.
