"I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds." (Psalm 9:1)
David opens with a commitment to give thanks. It’s a decision made before the emotions arrive.
The psalm then moves through specific things God has done: judged righteously, rebuked the nations, blotted out their names, vindicated the oppressed, been a refuge for those in trouble, not ignored the cry of the afflicted.
When we practice praise we should be remembering and praising God specifically. It’s different from abstractly saying that God is good. Rather, it’s remembering what He did and where He showed up. It’s specifically remember the deeds worth telling.
Gratitude is easier when it’s specific. Vague appreciation is thin. But naming exactly what God did, exactly when and exactly how, builds something that holds up under pressure.
The psalm ends asking God to remember the poor and not let human beings triumph. From praise to petition, the whole arc grounded in the specific character of God.
