Psalm 8

The Smallness That Isn't Crushing

"What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?" (Psalm 8:4)

David looks up at the moon and the stars and asks the question that has occurred to every human who has ever spent time under the night sky: what are we, exactly, in relation to all of this?

The universe is enormous. We are small. And yet God is mindful of us. Cares for us. Has crowned us with glory and honor. Has made us rulers over the works of His hands.

The smallness in Psalm 8 is clarifying because the question is not whether we matter. It’s who decides that we matter. And the answer is the one who set the moon and the stars in place. He is mindful. He cares. Not because of what we’ve produced. Because He chose to be.

Feeling small under the night sky can lead to despair. It also can lead to worship. The difference is whether you believe there’s someone looking back.

QUESTION TO CONSIDER
How would it change how you carry yourself today if you started from the reality that the God who set the stars in place is specifically mindful of you?
