"Know that the Lord has set apart his faithful servant for himself; the Lord hears when I call to him." (Psalm 4:3)
David was surrounded by people turning his glory to shame, loving delusions and seeking false gods. And he asked them: how long?
But then we see that he turned inward. Search your hearts and be silent. Offer the sacrifices of the righteous. Trust in the Lord.
The question he’s really asking isn’t directed at his enemies. It’s directed at anyone who will listen: do you actually know what you’re chasing? You’re looking for good in all the wrong places. Lift up the light of your face on us, Lord.
He then tells God that he has filled his heart with greater joy than when grain and new wine abounds.
We see that it is not despite the circumstances but is instead in the middle of being surrounded by people who want to ruin him. His heart has more joy than the most abundant harvest because the source of his joy is something that can’t be taken by the people trying to take everything else.
QUESTION TO CONSIDER
What are you chasing right now that God is trying to replace with something that can’t be taken?
