Psalm 11

When the Foundations Are Shaken

"When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?" (Psalm 11:3)

David’s advisors are telling him to flee. The wicked have strung their bows. The arrows are aimed. The foundations are being destroyed. What can the righteous do? The implication is: nothing except to run.

David’s response is essentially: I’m not running. The Lord is in his holy temple. The Lord is on his heavenly throne. He examines the righteous and the wicked. He sees everything.

The foundation that’s being destroyed isn’t the Lord’s throne. The foundation being destroyed is whatever human structure David was relying on. And when those crumble, the question is whether there’s something underneath them that doesn’t.

We’ve all had seasons where things we thought were stable turned out not to be. And the question every time is: what’s under that? When the thing you were standing on moves, what do you find yourself standing on next?

David’s answer was: I was already standing on something that doesn’t move. I just forgot it for a moment.

QUESTION TO CONSIDER
When the foundations around you shake, what do you discover you were actually standing on?
