Nahum 2

When the Fortress Falls

"Nineveh is like a pool whose water is draining away." (Nahum 2:8)

Nahum 2 describes the fall of Nineveh in vivid, almost cinematic detail. Chariots racing. Soldiers stumbling. The city that had been the most powerful in the known world unraveling in real time.

The image that stays with me is the pool draining. All that accumulated power, all that military might, all that wealth, just draining away. People fleeing. Nobody stopping them. The call goes out and nobody turns back.

Nineveh had been the empire. The fortress of fortresses. The city that other cities feared. And the prophet describes its fall with the quiet certainty of someone who knows it’s already decided.

There’s something sobering about the things we build our security around. Not just nations. The structures in our own lives we treat as permanent. The income we assume will always be there. The reputation we’ve built. The platform. The influence. The relationships we haven’t tended because we assumed they’d survive neglect.

Nineveh’s pool drained because the foundation was wrong. What looked like permanence was always temporary. And the thing that made the city feel invincible was exactly what made its fall so complete.

QUESTION TO CONSIDER
What are you treating as permanent that is actually more fragile than you’ve admitted?
