Matthew 7

The Fruit Test

"By their fruit you will recognize them." (Matthew 7:16)

The Sermon on the Mount ends with a series of warnings. About the wide gate versus the narrow one. About false prophets who look like sheep. About people who call Jesus Lord but don’t do what He says. About the house built on rock versus the house built on sand.

The fruit test is simple and inconvenient. You don’t evaluate a tree by how it looks or what it claims to be. You wait for the fruit. Good trees produce good fruit. Bad trees can’t. The fruit is the evidence.

That applies to people and to the ways we build our lives. Not what you say about what you believe. What actually comes out. How you treat people when nothing is at stake. What you do with money when nobody is watching. How you respond to people who can do nothing for you. The fruit that comes from the ordinary and the private is more revealing than anything performed publicly.

The house on rock and the house on sand look the same before the storm. Both were built. Both have occupants. Both might even look similar from the outside. The difference only becomes visible when the rain comes and the wind blows and the water rises. Then the foundation matters.
