Matthew 5

The Upside-Down Kingdom

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:3)

The Sermon on the Mount opens with eight blessings that contradict almost everything about how the world measures a good life. Blessed are the poor in spirit. The mourning. The meek. The hungry. The merciful. The pure in heart. The peacemakers. The persecuted.

These are not the people winning in any conventional sense. They’re the people who have run out of resources, who are grieving, who have been pushed aside, who are chasing something the world doesn’t value. And Jesus says: theirs is the kingdom.

That inversion is the foundation of everything that follows in the sermon. You have heard it said. But I say to you. The law said don’t murder. Jesus says don’t nurse the anger. The law said don’t commit adultery. Jesus says don’t cultivate the lust. The law said love your neighbor. Jesus says love your enemy.

He’s not abolishing the law. He’s going after the heart underneath the behavior. Because the heart is where the real action is. You can manage your behavior while your heart goes somewhere entirely different. Jesus isn’t interested in managed behavior. He’s interested in transformed desire.

QUESTION TO CONSIDER
What behavior are you managing that you haven’t let God address at the level of desire?
