"Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." (Matthew 4:4)
Jesus went into the desert immediately after the baptism. Forty days. No food. And then the devil showed up with three offers, each one targeting something real.
The first targeted physical need. You’re hungry. Turn these stones to bread. The second targeted identity. If you’re the Son of God, prove it. Jump. Make the angels catch you. The third targeted ambition. All the kingdoms of the world. All of it. Just bow.
Jesus answered every temptation with Scripture. Not argument, not power, not a display of who He actually was. Just the word. It is written. It is written. It is written.
What strikes me is the nature of the first temptation. Jesus was genuinely hungry. The need was real. And the devil’s offer addressed the real need with a solution that required Jesus to act outside of His Father’s timing and provision. That’s still the shape of most temptation. A real need, addressed through a means that bypasses trust.
The hunger was legitimate. The bread would have been real bread. The problem was the source and the timing. Jesus waited for God to provide rather than taking the shortcut.
