"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!" (Matthew 23:13)
Seven times. Woe to you. Jesus is not interested in softening this.
He goes through their failures specifically. They don’t practice what they preach. They tie up heavy burdens for others and don’t lift a finger to help. Everything they do is for show. They love the place of honor and the greeting in the marketplace. They shut the door of the kingdom in people’s faces.
And the most cutting one: you clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead.
That image. Whitewashed on the outside so nobody can see the death inside.
I’ve had to sit with the difference between building for reputation and building for reality. The whitewashing that happens when we care more about how things look than about what’s actually there. The performance of health that takes the place of health itself.
Jesus loved the Pharisees. He ate with them. He engaged with them. The severity of this chapter isn’t contempt. It’s the frustration of someone who has offered truth again and again and watched it be used for self-protection instead of transformation.
QUESTION TO CONSIDER
What are you whitewashing in your life that needs to be acknowledged for what it actually is?
