Matthew 18

The One Who Left

"And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off." (Matthew 18:13)

The disciples asked Jesus who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. He called a child and stood the child among them. Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest.

Then the parable of the lost sheep. One out of a hundred wanders. The shepherd leaves the ninety-nine and goes after the one. And when he finds it, there is more joy over that one than over all the others who stayed.

Jesus is making a claim about what God values. Not just the gathered. The lost. Not just the safe. The wandered. The joy over the recovered is disproportionate to the logic of the numbers. One out of a hundred. And yet the joy over finding it is greater than the satisfaction of keeping the ninety-nine.

This chapter also has the hardest teaching on forgiveness in Matthew. Not seven times. Seventy times seven. And the parable of the servant who was forgiven an impossible debt and then refused to forgive a small one.

The connection is direct. We forgive because we have been forgiven something much larger. The failure to forgive is not just unkindness. It’s forgetting the scale of what was done for us.
