"What goes into someone's mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them." (Matthew 15:11)
The Pharisees were upset that Jesus’ disciples didn’t wash their hands before eating. Not for hygiene reasons. Ritual reasons. And Jesus said: you’ve replaced the command of God with your tradition. You’ve found a way to honor God with your lips while your heart is far from Him.
Then the disciples told Him the Pharisees were offended. And Jesus said: leave them. Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots.
What defiles a person isn’t what goes in. It’s what comes out. Evil thoughts. Murder. Adultery. Sexual immorality. Theft. False testimony. Slander. These come from the heart. That’s where the actual problem is.
Jesus is doing what He does consistently in Matthew: going underneath the external behavior to the internal reality. You can have perfect ritual practice and a corrupt heart. The ritual doesn’t fix the heart. Only God working in the heart changes what comes out.
And then immediately after this confrontation with the religious establishment, a Canaanite woman shows up and begs for her daughter. She’s not Jewish. She has no ritual standing. And Jesus healed her daughter because of her faith.
The outsider with faith, over the insider with tradition.
