"Lord, if it's you, tell me to come to you on the water." (Matthew 14:28)
Jesus fed five thousand people with five loaves and two fish, sent the disciples ahead in the boat, dismissed the crowd, and went up on a mountainside to pray. Alone. After the miracle, He withdrew.
That detail matters. The bigger the public moment, the more He needed the private one.
Then in the middle of the night, the disciples saw Him walking on the water and were terrified. And Peter, to his credit, asked to come. Jesus said come. Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus.
And then he looked at the wind. And he sank.
I’ve read that story as a failure story for years. Peter lacked faith. He looked away. He sank. But the more I sit with it, the more I see it differently. Every other disciple stayed in the boat. Peter got out. He walked on water. He’s the only human being besides Jesus who has ever done that.
The sinking doesn’t cancel the walking. And Jesus caught him immediately. Before he went under.
QUESTION TO CONSIDER
Where are you staying in the boat because you’re afraid of sinking, when the invitation might be to get out anyway?
