"Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?" (Matthew 11:3)
John the Baptist was in prison. And he sent his disciples to ask Jesus directly: are you the one, or not?
This is the same John who baptized Jesus. Who saw the Spirit descend like a dove. Who said: behold, the Lamb of God. And now, from a prison cell, he’s asking whether he had the right person.
Prison changes your questions.
Jesus didn’t rebuke John for the doubt. He sent back evidence. The blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the good news proclaimed to them. Look at what’s happening. Let the evidence speak.
And then Jesus spoke about John to the crowd: among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist. The man asking if he had the right person was the greatest prophet of his generation.
Doubt and greatness coexisting. Prison and faithfulness running together. John’s question doesn’t disqualify him. It reveals his humanity. And Jesus answers it with gentleness, not correction.
