John 21

Growing After Failure

"Do you love me?" (John 21:17)

After Peter’s failure, Jesus didn’t discard him. He restored him through conversation, honesty, and renewed calling. Three questions for three denials. He didn’t skip past it. He walked through it.

Failure has a way of shaping identity if you let it. Shame convinces people that their worst moments define them permanently. But Jesus saw beyond Peter’s denial and into who he could still become.

Growth after failure usually requires humility. Not pretending the mistake didn’t happen. Just letting God rebuild trust, character, and dependence through it. That’s slower than we want. But it’s real.

And then notice: Jesus didn’t only forgive Peter. He recommissioned him. That part matters.

QUESTION TO CONSIDER
Have you let past failure speak louder than God’s ability to restore and keep shaping you?
