John 19 slows me down every time. You can’t rush through it. It forces you to stay with the cost of love, faithful through suffering, misunderstanding, humiliation, abandonment.
One reason the cross matters so much to me is that it reveals the seriousness of sin and the depth of God’s love at the same time. Jesus didn’t walk away when it got costly. He stayed.
And then those last words: It is finished. Not defeated. Finished. The mission was completed even though from the outside it looked like total loss.
God is often accomplishing deeper victory in moments that look like weakness.
