"They loved human praise more than praise from God." (John 12:43)
That verse lands differently every time I read it, because approval can shape more decisions than we realize, quietly, without us noticing.
I’ve seen this in myself. You start filtering obedience through how it will be perceived. You make a decision based on what will land well. And slowly, public affirmation becomes the foundation you’re building on. That’s a dangerous foundation. It shifts constantly. Jesus received a crowd one moment and got abandoned the next, in the same chapter.
There’s real freedom in becoming less controlled by applause. Not because feedback stops mattering. But because faithfulness matters more. Obedience gets steadier when it’s rooted in conviction instead of image management.
A healthy spiritual life usually requires learning how to disappoint expectations without abandoning integrity.
