"I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth." (Genesis 9:13)
God made a covenant with Noah and every living creature. He put a rainbow in the sky as a sign. It was unconditional. God wasn’t asking for anything in return. He was simply committing.
And then, a few verses later, Noah got drunk and passed out in his tent. It’s told in the same chapter. The covenant and the failure appear right next to each other.
This is surprisingly comforting because we tend to tell stories in arcs that resolve cleanly. The hero overcomes or the faithful person stays faithful. But Genesis keeps showing us people who are genuinely used by God and also genuinely flawed in the same chapter.
Noah was righteous enough to be saved and weak enough to embarrass himself immediately after. Both things were true. And God’s covenant wasn’t contingent on Noah’s consistency.
That’s grace. It’s the kind that commits before the failure happens.
