Genesis 39

When Doing Right Costs You

"Though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her." (Genesis 39:10)

Joseph was in Potiphar’s house. He’d been purchased as a slave, had built trust and responsibility, and now was being pursued daily by Potiphar’s wife. And he refused. Every day.

He gave reasons. He named what it would cost Potiphar. He named what it would cost him before God. And then one day she grabbed his cloak and he ran.

He ended up in prison.

Doing the right thing didn’t protect him. It cost him. The false accusation of the scorned woman landed him in a cell. And the chapter ends with him in prison, no explanation, no immediate rescue.

But the last verse says: the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.

That’s not a happy ending in the conventional sense. He’s still in prison. But God’s presence isn’t contingent on the circumstances being favorable. It’s present in the prison too.

Integrity doesn’t guarantee outcomes. It guarantees something more important: that you become the kind of person who can be trusted with what comes next.
