Genesis 29

Getting What You Gave

"What is this you have done to me? Did I not serve with you for Rachel? Why then have you deceived me?" (Genesis 29:25)

Jacob worked seven years for Rachel. Laban gave him Leah instead. Jacob woke up the morning after the wedding and discovered the deception.

The man who deceived his father was deceived by his father-in-law. The man who disguised himself to steal a blessing woke up to a woman who wasn’t who he thought she was.

The Bible doesn’t editorialize. It just tells the story. But the shape of it is unmistakable.

This isn’t karma in the simple sense. But there is something in Genesis that keeps showing the consequences of deception cycling back. What you sow, you tend to encounter again, sometimes from a different direction.

Jacob loved Rachel. He worked another seven years for her. And then another six years for flocks. Twenty years total, under a man who kept changing the terms. The man who had manipulated his way into a blessing spent two decades experiencing what it felt like to be on the other end.

God was still with him through all of it. But the shaping of Jacob’s character required exactly what those years produced.
