Genesis 19

The Danger of Lingering

"When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city." (Genesis 19:16)

The angels told Lot to run. Get out. Don’t look back. Lot hesitated.

The angels grabbed his hand. They pulled him out. Mercy that moved faster than Lot’s willingness to leave.

Even after being dragged out, Lot’s wife looked back and became a pillar of salt. And the angels had to argue Lot out of the mountains and into a smaller city because the mountains felt like too much.

There’s something in Lot that couldn’t fully commit to leaving. Even when staying meant destruction, even when the angels were physically removing him, something in him was still oriented toward Sodom.

I’ve had to ask myself what I’m still oriented toward in seasons when God is clearly calling me out of something. Not the dramatic sins. The comfortable ones. The familiar environments. The ways of living that feel safe even when they’re not good. The patterns I keep drifting back toward even when I’ve seen enough to know better.

Lot’s hesitation didn’t disqualify him. The angels dragged him to safety anyway. But it’s worth asking why we hesitate when the call is clear.
