Genesis 18

The Conversation at the Tent

"Is anything too hard for the Lord?" (Genesis 18:14)

Three visitors came to Abraham’s tent. He ran to meet them, fed them lavishly, stood nearby while they ate. And then one of them said: this time next year Sarah will have a son.

Sarah, listening from inside the tent, laughed.

God heard it. Is anything too hard for the Lord?

I love that God heard the laugh. Didn’t punish it. Didn’t dismiss it. Just asked the question. Because the laugh wasn’t lack of reverence. It was the honest response of a woman who had been waiting so long that hope had started to feel embarrassing. And God asked the question directly: is anything too hard for Me?

Later, when Isaac was born, Sarah said: God has brought me laughter. The same word. The same sound. But what it meant had changed completely.

That transformation, from the laugh of disbelief to the laugh of joy, is one of the most personal moments in Genesis. And it started with a question God already knew the answer to.

QUESTION TO CONSIDER
Where has waiting made hope feel too embarrassing to hold?
