Genesis 17

The Sign You Carry

"You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you." (Genesis 17:11)

God changed Abram’s name to Abraham, reaffirmed the covenant, and gave him a sign to carry in his body. Not a ritual performed once and forgotten. A permanent mark. Something carried every day that said: this is who I belong to.

Abraham was ninety-nine years old. He circumcised himself and every male in his household the same day.

No delay. No negotiation. Same day.

I’ve thought about what it means to carry something in your body that marks whose you are. The commitments that aren’t just intellectual positions but have become embodied. That cost something to keep. That you can’t remove when it becomes inconvenient.

Most of what I’ve committed to in my life I could walk away from without a physical reminder that I once said yes. The covenant God made with Abraham required a mark that stayed. That was always present. That couldn’t be forgotten in a busy season.

QUESTION TO CONSIDER
What would it look like for your commitments to be that embodied rather than just held in your mind?
