"I will accept nothing belonging to you, not even a thread or the strap of a sandal." (Genesis 14:23)
Abraham just won a battle. He recovered Lot and all the goods that had been taken. The king of Sodom offered him everything back, a full share of the spoils.
Abraham refused. He didn’t want the king of Sodom to be able to say he had made Abraham rich.
That’s a remarkable piece of self-awareness. Abraham understood that how you receive things matters as much as what you receive. That some gifts come with strings attached to the giver’s narrative. That accepting this offer would give the king of Sodom a story about Abraham that Abraham didn’t want told.
There’s a kind of discernment in that which I find rare and valuable. Not refusing generosity across the board. But being clear about which offers come with a narrative you don’t want to inhabit. Which partnerships, which sources of funding, which relationships would change the story of what you’re building in ways that aren’t worth it.
Melchizedek, the priest of God Most High, had already blessed Abraham. He already had a source. The king of Sodom’s offer was unnecessary and came at a cost Abraham could see even if others couldn’t.
QUESTION TO CONSIDER
What offers are you considering that might come with a narrative you don’t want to own?
