Genesis 12

The Call and the Compromise

"Go from your country, your people and your father's household to the land I will show you." (Genesis 12:1)

God told Abraham to go to the land I will show you. The destination would be revealed in motion, not in advance.

Abraham went. That act of faith echoes through the rest of Scripture. He’s held up as the father of faith specifically because he went without seeing.

And then, a few verses later, Abraham arrived in Egypt and told Sarah to say she was his sister because he was afraid they’d kill him to take her. In the same chapter.

The man who trusted God enough to leave everything couldn’t trust God enough to protect him in Egypt. The faith that moved mountains in verse 1 looked a lot shakier by verse 13.

We all have done this. Trusted God in one area of our life completely and completely failed to trust Him in another area at the exact same time. The courage and the cowardice coexists. The obedience and the self-protection runs in parallel.

Abraham’s faith wasn’t perfect or consistent. It was real and growing. And God kept working with him anyway.

QUESTION TO CONSIDER
Where are you trusting God fully in one area while quietly taking matters into your own hands in another?
