Genesis 11

The Limits of What We Build

"Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves." (Genesis 11:4)

The stated goal of Babel was to make a name. Not to serve God ot to build something that would last. Babel wanted to be remembered and to reach high enough that nobody could ignore them.

God scattered them before they finished, not because the tower was too tall, but because something was wrong underneath the ambition. The building was in service of self-exaltation. And God said: this is only the beginning of what they will do.

In our own lives, sometimes, the mission is real but the motivation underneath has quietly become: I want to matter. I want to be remembered. I want to build something impressive enough that people can’t ignore it.

That version of building doesn’t honor God even when it uses God’s name. And it tends to produce structures that scatter rather than gather, because the foundation isn’t right.

The people of Babel wanted to make a name for themselves. God had already told Abraham, a few chapters later, that He would make Abraham’s name great. Same outcome. Completely different posture.

QUESTION TO CONSIDER
What are you building right now, and whose name is it actually for?
