Genesis 10

The Table of Nations

"From these the maritime peoples spread out into their territories by their clans within their nations, each with its own language." (Genesis 10:5)

Genesis 10 is another chapter people seem to skim. Seventy nations are listed. Names of people most of us have never heard of. The genealogy of the whole world spreading out from one family.

But the theological weight underneath it is significant. Every people group, nation and tongue traces back to the same origin. There’s no people on earth that stands outside this family tree. No nation that got here by a different route.

That matters because so much of human history is the story of groups deciding they are fundamentally different from other groups, superior or disconnected. Genesis 10 says that’s not true. Every table of nations leads back to the same table.

The same origin doesn’t mean the same experience. It doesn’t erase real difference. But it does insist on a shared humanity that can’t be talked away.

QUESTION TO CONSIDER
How does knowing that every nation traces back to the same family change the way you see the people who seem most different from you?
