Daniel 9

Praying Without Excuses

"We have sinned and done wrong. We have been wicked and have rebelled." (Daniel 9:5)

Daniel’s prayer in chapter 9 is one of the most striking in all of Scripture. And what strikes me most is that Daniel wasn’t personally responsible for the exile. He was a young man when it happened. He spent his whole life being faithful in the middle of someone else’s consequences.

But he didn’t pray that way. He didn’t say: they sinned, not me. He said we. He identified fully with his people, took their failure on as his own, and stood before God without excuse.

That’s a posture I find uncomfortable. Because my instinct when I’m aware of collective failure is to locate myself outside of it. To say: I didn’t do that, I’m not like them. But Daniel’s prayer suggests that belonging to a people means sharing in the weight of what that people has done. Not performing guilt you don’t feel. Being willing to stand in the gap without protecting your own record.

And then God responded. Gabriel came mid-prayer. Before Daniel had even finished, the answer was on its way.

Honest prayer without excuse moves something. Not always fast. Not always the way we expect. But it moves something.
