Daniel 5

You've Been Weighed

"You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting." (Daniel 5:27)

Belshazzar threw a party with the sacred cups stolen from God’s temple. Drinking from them like trophies. Then a hand appeared and wrote on the wall, and the party stopped.

What strikes me about this chapter is that the writing was sudden, but the verdict wasn’t. Belshazzar’s life had already been accumulating toward this moment. His father had been humbled and learned from it. Belshazzar watched that happen and still chose differently. He knew better and did it anyway.

God’s judgment in Daniel 5 isn’t impulsive. It’s patient. And then it’s final.

I don’t love sitting with this chapter because it asks me to take seriously the idea that there is a reckoning. Not a vague one. A specific one. The way I use what God has entrusted to me, my gifts, my influence, my resources, is being accounted for.

It also reminds me that Daniel was in the room. Quiet, uncorrupted, decades into a foreign empire. Still the person people called when they needed someone who could actually hear from God. That kind of long faithfulness is easy to underestimate and nearly impossible to fake.
