Daniel 3

The Furnace

"But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods." (Daniel 3:18)

That verse stops me every time.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego didn’t say God would rescue them. They said He could. And then they said: but even if He doesn’t, the answer is still no.

That’s not the faith of people who follow God because the math works out. That’s the faith of people who follow God because He is God. Full stop. Not because of what they’d get. Not because of a guaranteed outcome. Because of who He is.

Most of us are comfortable with faith when obedience comes with obvious protection. We’re less comfortable when the furnace is real and we don’t know how hot it gets. But the three men walked in anyway. And Jesus was in there with them. The king saw four people in the fire. The fourth looked like the Son of God.

I’ve been in seasons where I didn’t get the rescue I prayed for. Not the timing I wanted, not the outcome I expected. What I’ve had to sit with is whether my faith was ever really unconditional, or whether it was quietly contingent on things going a certain way.

The furnace reveals that. Not to punish you. To show you what’s actually inside.

QUESTION TO CONSIDER
Is your faith built on what God does, or on who God is?
