Acts 6

Doing Less So More Gets Done

"It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables." (Acts 6:2)

The church was growing. And with growth came a real problem: some widows were being overlooked in the daily food distribution. It was a genuine need. And the apostles’ response is worth studying carefully.

They didn’t say the problem didn’t matter. They didn’t dismiss it. They said: this matters enough to solve properly, which means we need other people to carry it. So they asked the community to identify seven trustworthy people filled with the Spirit and wisdom, and handed the responsibility to them.

That decision freed the apostles to keep doing what only they could do. And it gave seven other people a meaningful role in a growing mission.

I’ve had to learn this more than once. Not every problem that lands in front of a leader is a problem the leader should solve. Sometimes the most faithful thing you can do is refuse to absorb a need that someone else is gifted to carry. That’s not avoidance. It’s multiplication. It creates capacity. It develops people. It makes the mission sustainable.

Doing less of the wrong things is sometimes what makes more of the right things possible.
