Acts 4

The Cost of Speaking Up

"For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard." (Acts 4:20)

Peter and John got arrested for healing someone. The religious leaders told them to stop speaking about Jesus. And their response was essentially: we can’t do that.

Not defiant. Just honest. We can’t stop talking about what we’ve seen and heard. The experience is too real. The instructions are too clear.

I’ve been in environments where faith felt like something to keep quiet about. Where mentioning God felt risky, where being known as a person of faith came with assumptions you had to manage. The pressure to compartmentalize is real. Nobody usually says stop talking about Jesus. They just create a culture where it feels awkward to start.

Peter and John didn’t have a PR strategy. They just couldn’t stop. And that kind of witness is harder to argue with than any theological debate. When something has become undeniable in your own life, authenticity does something arguments can’t.

The council could see the boldness. They also noticed these were ordinary men. The combination of unimpressive background and undeniable presence meant only one explanation made sense.

QUESTION TO CONSIDER
Where have you gone quiet about something that should still be spoken?
