Acts 18

Stay, Even When It's Hard

"Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent. For I am with you." (Acts 18:9-10)

Paul had been run out of several cities. Thessalonica, Berea, Athens. He arrived in Corinth and it would have been reasonable to expect more of the same. And then God spoke to him at night: don’t be afraid. I have many people in this city.

Paul stayed eighteen months.

That’s the longest he spent in any city in Acts. And he stayed because God told him to, not because the circumstances invited it. He still got dragged before the proconsul. He still dealt with opposition. But there were also people. A community. Aquila and Priscilla, who became close partners. A synagogue ruler who believed. A whole city of people God had already prepared.

Many of us have left things too early because the resistance felt like a sign that we were in the wrong place. Sometimes resistance is exactly that. But sometimes it’s just the friction that comes before the breakthrough. The hard part of staying is that you can’t always tell which kind you’re in from the inside.

God’s word to Paul wasn’t that it would get easier. It was: I am with you. Don’t be silent. That combination, presence and instruction without promised ease, is often how God meets us in the places He’s called us to stay.

QUESTION TO CONSIDER
Is there something you’ve been close to leaving that God might be asking you to stay in?
