Acts 17

Starting Where People Are

"I see that in every way you are very religious." (Acts 17:22)

Paul in Athens didn’t open with a condemnation. He didn’t start by telling them everything they had wrong. He walked around, observed, found the altar to an unknown god, and started there.

He met them in what they were already reaching toward. He didn’t pretend to agree with their theology. But he honored the reaching to use it as a door.

That’s a different approach than the one that leads with everything the other person has wrong. And it’s more effective, not just strategically but spiritually. People can tell when you’ve already decided what they need to hear before you’ve actually listened to where they are.

Paul quoted their own poets. He worked within the cultural vocabulary of the people he was talking to. And some mocked him, and some believed, and that’s usually how it goes when you tell the truth. But the ones who believed were genuinely convinced, not just argued into compliance.

Meeting people where they are isn’t a form of compromise. It’s the shape love takes when it wants to be understood.
